NOT ENOUGH VIOLA PLAYERS
There is currently a national shortage of viola players in Britain. For those playing the instrument (larger in size and deeper in tone than the violin), A______________. Places in orchestras and on music courses are more readily available for them than for the larger numbers of violinists.
Last weekend, for example, the National Children’s Orchestra (NCO) began rehearsals with viola places still vacant. ‘Violists are in short supply, says Vivienne Price, the NCO’s founder and vice-president. ‘People all want to be first violin but B_______________ . All the different kinds are required, not just one.’
With more than 300 of the country’s top violinists competing for 170 places in the NCO this year, standards were very high, even for the training section, which takes seven to ten-year-olds. But there were just 63 competing for the NCO’s 70 viola positions and, as a result, candidates who have not reached the same standard as those applying for the violin places were accepted. ‘We encourage children to apply for the training orchestra, С_______________, says Miss Price.
Peter Hewitt, director of the junior department of the Royal College of Music, says D_______________, with 24 players, but there are many more violinists. 'Younger children particularly like the glamour of the melody line, and the bass line has its attractions,' he says. `But the middle line, which is played by the viola, is a problem. I think the viola has a gorgeous sound, but E_______________ .'
Both the Royal College and the NCO are trying to encourage children to take up the viola. It really frustrates me,' says Roger Clarkson, the NCO's director of music. 'People will say that, if you can't play the violin, F_______________ . But the viola is actually a wonderful instrument in its own right.'

A QUICK WORKOUT CAN DO YOU AS MUCH GOOD AS A LONG ONE
For those who are too busy to spend as long exercising at the gym as they would like — and for those who are a bit lacking in the willpower department — there is good news. Researchers have found that fitness enthusiasts can reduce the time they spend working out by two-thirds A__________.
A study involving male weightlifters has suggested that there is no point in exercising for long periods. Those who exercised less saw a significant decrease in body fat. The study focused on 16 students aged 19 to 23, B__________. They were split into two groups. Both carried out upper-body training three times a week for eight weeks. One group did one series of eight repetitions, C__________. At the end of the study, both groups had improved `significantly' in terms of muscular strength, said the researchers.
Report author Dr Julien Baker said: 'This study indicates that it is unnecessary D__________ and that a shorter work-out may achieve the same results. Many fitness classes are now shorter in duration and promise results in quicker times, and there is much research to suggest that interval training — intense activity E__________ - and shorter, high-intensity workouts — performing at 80 per cent of your maximum aerobic capacity — can achieve maximum results in shorter periods. This kind of research may see a change in the way we exercise and show that it may be better to do a number of regular express workouts which would fit in with the busy lives that many lead.'
Dr Baker said he also hoped the findings would encourage more people F__________. `The more people we get doing a little exercise which is beneficial, as opposed to fewer people doing a lot of exercise, the better it will be,' he added.

Stonehenge is probably the most important prehistoric monument in Britain. The Stonehenge that we see today is the final stage A__________. But first let us look back 5,000 years.
The first Stonehenge was a large earthwork or Henge, comprising a ditch, bank, and the Aubrey holes, all probably built around 3100 BC. The Aubrey holes are round pits in the chalk, about one metre wide and deep, B__________. Excavations have revealed cremated human bones in some of the chalk filling, but the holes themselves were probably made not for the purpose of graves but as part of the religious ceremony. Short-ly after this stage Stonehenge was abandoned, left untouched for over 1000 years.
The second and most dramatic stage of Stonehenge started around 2150 BC. Some 82 bluestones from south-west Wales were transported to the site. It is thought that these stones, some weighing 4 tonnes each, were dragged on rollers and sledges to the headwaters and then loaded onto rafts. This astonishing journey covered nearly 240 miles. Once at the site, these stones were set up in the centre C__________.
The third stage of Stonehenge, about 2000 BC, saw the arrival of the Sarsen stones. The largest of the Sarsen stones weigh 50 tonnes and transportation by water would have been impossible D__________. These stones were arranged in an outer circle with a continuous run of lintels. Inside the circle, five trilithons were placed in a horse-shoe arrangement, E__________.

Ever wonder A__________? There's actually quite a bit of science going on behind the scenes, with several components working together to bring you that digital-quality signal.
Your channel selection begins with the programming sources themselves. Companies like Showtime, HBO or Cinemax create their programming. Channel providers then purchase rights to this programming B__________. Once a provider has their programming in place, they turn their attention to the broadcast centre to compress and convert the programming for satellite broadcast.
Your Dish Network Programming originally arrives as a digital stream of video, which is then compressed and converted through an encoder, typically using the MPEG2 format. This format reduces the overall size of the video, C__________.
Once encoded, the video is then encrypted D__________. After the video has been encrypted, it is sent to the provider's satellite, strategically positioned in the sky.
The satellite itself uses a dish similar to your own satellite dish, to receive the video and send it back down to Earth. When the satellite sends the signal back down to Earth, it is picked up by your satellite dish, a small round antenna that receives the satellite's broadcast and sends the video on to your satellite TV receiver.
The satellite TV receiver is that little black box that sits inside your home and allows you to choose E__________. The receiver actually performs several important functions in the satellite viewing process, including the decryption of the signal itself. If you remember, the satellite signal was scrambled by the provider to protect it from unpaying consumers. Your receiver 'descrambles' that signal and converts the signal into a format F__________. Together these amazing components create a vividly clear digital picture for over 200 satellite channels.

On 25 October 1881, a little boy was born in Malaga, Spain. It was a difficult birth and to help him breathe, cigar smoke was blown into his nose! But despite being the youngest ever smoker, this baby grew up to be one of the 20th century's greatest painters — Pablo Picasso.
Picasso showed his truly exceptional talent from a very young age. His first word was lapiz (Spanish for pencil) and he learned to draw before he could talk.
He was the only son in the family and very good-looking, A__________. He hated school and often refused to go unless his doting parents allowed him to take one of his father's pet pigeons with him!
Apart from pigeons, his great love was art, and when in 1891 his father, who was an amateur artist, got a job as a drawing teacher at a college, Pablo went with him to the college. He often watched his father painting and sometimes was allowed to help. One evening his father was painting a picture of their pigeons B__________. He returned to find that Pablo had completed the picture, and it was so amazingly beautiful and lifelike that he gave his son his own palette and brushes and never painted again. Pablo was just 13.
From then onwards there was no stopping him. Many people realized that he was a genius but he disappointed those C__________. He was always breaking the rules of artistic tradition and shocked the public with his strange and powerful pictures. He is probably best known for his 'Cubist' pictures, D__________. The Bronze Horseman
Saint Petersburg was founded in 1703 by Tsar Peter the Great. During the following two centuries, A__________ the city quickly developed into the world's cultural centre. Despite numerous monumental buildings, the city has an unmistakable charm thanks to its channels, bridges and statues, B__________.
The statue of Peter the Great, known as the Bronze Horseman, is a tribute to the founder of St. Petersburg. The monument is one of the most famous symbols of the city. The impressive statue depicts the founder of St. Petersburg C__________ guiding his country towards the future.
The pedestal of the statue resembles a cliff D__________ of red granite. It took nine months to transport it from the Gulf of Finland. An inscription on the side of the pedestal says "to Peter the First from Catherine the Second" in Latin and Russian.
Peter and his horse, E__________ sit atop the cliff, facing the west. It is said that the founder of the city faces the west because the countries of the West were his source of inspiration for ideas to reform Old Russia. A snake, symbol of treason, is trampled by the horse. As long F__________, the legend says, enemy forces will never overtake St. Petersburg. That legend led government officials to protect the statue during World War II with sandbags and a wooden structure surrounding it The statue survived through the war with barely a scratch.
1. which is rearing up on its hind legs
2. as a quite determined absolute leader
3. and is made from one huge, solid piece
4. which give St. Petersburg romantic flair
5. when St. Petersburg was the capital of Russia
6. when channel cruises are so popular with tourists
7. as the statue keeps its location in Senatskaya Square
(During the following two centuries), мы понимаем, что relative clause (придаточное предложение в составе сложного) должно начинаться со слова when, относящегося ко времени. During the following two centuries, when St. Petersburg was the capital of Russia the city quickly developed into the world's cultural centre.
B Речь идёт о сооружениях в городе channels, bridges and statues, значит relative clause будет начинаться с which.
...the city has an unmistakable charm thanks to its channels, bridges and statues, which give St. Petersburg romantic flair
Petersburg.
The impressive statue depicts the founder of St. Petersburg as a quite determined absolute leader guiding his country towards the future.
3: The pedestal of the statue resembles a cliff and is made from one huge, solid piece of red granite.
1: Peter and his horse, which is rearing up on its hind legs sit atop the cliff, facing the west.
F Устойчивому выражению as long as не хватает второго as.
As long as the statue keeps its location in Senatskaya Square, the legend says, enemy forces will never overtake St. Petersburg.
