A. The caller calls his classmate working for the English Language Centre.
B. The centre offers courses in different languages.
C. The next semester starts in three months.
D. The programme is free for full-time students.
E. It's possible to apply for a course through the Internet.
F. The centre requires the evidence of the applicant's financial reliability.
G. One can use mail to send the application documents to the centre.
A. The caller calls his classmate working for the English Language Centre. (FALSE)
(I've heard about your centre from my classmate),
B. The centre offers courses in different languages. (NOT STATED)
На вопрос "What kind of courses do you offer? " (Какие курсы вы предлагаете?), представитель центра отвечает "Well, first of all, the purpose of our program is to provide language learning opportunities for students who would like to master basic language skills, let's say, for his or her job, or to study intensively to enter a US college or university."
C. The next semester starts in three months. (NOT STATED)
Well, we start in March and always ask applicants to apply no later than two months before the semester begins.
D. The programme is free for full-time students. (FALSE)
На вопрос звонящего "What is the tuition fee for a full-time student?" представителт центра отвечает "It's two thousand and thirty dollars."
E. It's possible to apply for a course through the Internet. (TRUE)
... we can send you an application and you can mail it back to us, or you can fill out the application form that's on our website. - ....
F. The centre requires the evidence of the applicant's financial reliability. (TRUE)
You would need to send in a sponsorship form indicating who will be responsible financially for the student while studying in our program, and a bank statement showing that you or your sponsor has enough money to cover tuition expenses and living costs.
G. One can use mail to send the application documents to the centre. (TRUE)
You can either send the application packet by regular mail or you can fax it. -

(she mentioned Big Ben as a part of the jogging tour, but we don't know if it's her favourite place or not)

A. Learners spend more time having professional tuition than doing private practice.
B. A lot of people are surprised by what happens when they have lessons with someone they know well.
C. Things you learn from someone you know can cause you to fail your driving test.
D. Instructors can charge for lessons even if they are not officially approved.

B. 1 Эксперт говорит, что, занимаясь с тем, кого они хорошо знают, “многие обнаруживают, что это вызывает больше споров, чем они могли себе представить” (‘many реоре find that it causes more arguments than they еver imagined’).
D. 2 Эксперт рассказывает, что “право брать плату за занятия” (‘аге allowed to charge money for lessons’) ‘имеют только инструкторы, “имеющие достаточную квалификацию, зарегистрированные и утвержденные официальным органом” (‘рroperly qualified, registered and аррroved by the official body (организацией)’).
E. 3 Эксперт говорит, что зарегистрированные инструкторы могут “пройти с вами правила дорожного движения для подготовки к теоретической части экзамена” ('guide you through the Highway Code in preparation for the theory part of the driving test’).
F. 2 Эксперт говорит, что инструктор “сможет предложить вам дополнительную помощь” (‘may be able to offer additional help’) после того, как вы сдали экзамен, Такую дополнительную помощь предоставляет курс Pass Plus.
G. 1 Эксперт говорит, что, пройдя курс Pass Plus, вы могли бы “снизить стоимость вашей страховки” (‘end up reducing the cost of your insurance’) (платить меньше за страховку как водитель), что для водителей является “хорошей новостью” ('welcome news').

A. Alice's summer holidays will be over soon.
B. Alice is going to get paid for her volunteer work.
C. Alice has visited the Galapagos islands before.
D. Alice knows some Russian.
E. Miles thinks going to Russia is a good idea.
F. Alice is thinking about choosing Italy as one of her destinations.
G. Alice loves Italian food.
Myles: Hi. Alice. How you doing? Are you enjoying your summer holidays?
Alice: Oh, hi, Myles! I'm fine, thank you. Well, the summer holidays have just begun I suppose I need more time to realize that I don't have to study for a couple of months (пару месяцев учёбы не будет) and can do what I want.
Myles: So, what are your summer plans?
Alice: I'm going to work as a volunteer. I found a great environmental organization on the Internet, which is looking for volunteers to do environmental protection work in some of the most popular tourist destinations of the world.
Myles: It sounds interesting. Do they pay their employees?
Alice: No, they don't But they pay for a visa and all the costs. And I think it's a great offer.
Myles: Yeah. I agree. What are the places where you will go?
Alice: Well, I'm now trying to select the three places where I'd like to volunteer, but it's very hard to choose.
Myles: Really, can you tell me your shortlist?
Alice: Why not? The first location where I'd love to work is the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador Tourists go there to enjoy the beautiful nature of those islands. But they often want to take animals from there, which isn't permitted. So they must be watched.
Myles: Why don't you choose the Galapagos Islands? You'll be able to sunbathe there.
Alice: I know. But the job itself doesn't sound very interesting. The second place is Lake Baikal in Russia. It's a unique place. Plus, I'd be able to practice my Russian. You know, I've already been studying Russian for two years ("Я учу русский уже 2 года", значит, утверждение о том, что Элис в какой-то степени знает русский, - правда).
Myles: What will you have to do there?
Alice: As far as I understand, tourists pollute the lake and the area, it's necessary to collect the rubbish left by irresponsible travelers.
Myles: Okay, what are some of the other options?
Alice: There are some locations in Italy, and the work will be the same as at Lake Baikal.
Myles: Well, Alice, if you want my opinion, I think you should definitely choose Russia. How often can you get a chance to visit that amazing country? You may never get another opportunity to do it.
Alice: I think you are right, Myles. And my third choice will probably be a city in Italy ("моим третьим выбором, вероятно, будет город в Италии", значит, утверждение о том, что Элис рассматривает Италию, как одно из мест назначения для проведения каникул, - правда). I love Italian architecture.
Myles: I bet you are keen on trying the Italian food there. I know how you love pizza and spaghetti.
Alice: Oh, yes! I can't wait!

Mary: All in all — fine, I guess. I'm glad I ran into you. This is my first time attendingsuch an event. Would you keep me company?
Jack: Absolutely! Let's take a seat. So, why volunteering?
Mary: Well, my mom volunteered when she was at school. She had to communicate withso many people that it helped her to overcome her shyness. It seems that I have a similar issue. Mom calls it ‘an awkward self-consciousness of adolescence.’ So, here I am — following in my mom’s footsteps. What about you?
Jack: Oh, I enjoy interacting with others, and a bunch of regular meetings is part and parcel of volunteering. It allowed me to make many friends from other schools last year.
Mary: It seems like volunteering brings people together. Do you know the projects our school participates in?
Jack: Didn’t you read the brochure before coming here? It’s all there.
Mary: Nope, I didn’t have time.
Jack: Well, there are roles within the local community where you work mainly with peoplefrom our area, and support them with some tasks in their daily lives. These are based mostlyin hospitals, health centres, and libraries.
Mary: I don’t think those ones are for me. I’m not into health or working with the elderly.
Jack: Then probably you can make a difference at our school — helping primary schoolstudents.
Mary: What does it include?
Jack: You can become their reading partner and help them turn into proficient readers.Or, if you are of the artistic mind — which you are, as I know — you can tutor them indrama or give free art lessons.
Mary: Should I have good grades?
Jack: I'm not sure, but I would say that’s taken for granted. You may ask Ms Rodrigez.I’m sure she knows the answer.
Mary: I see... Is there anything that can take me outside our town?
Jack: I’m not sure about this year, but two years ago they offered a few places ata rainforest conservation program in Costa Rica.
Mary: Wow, that sounds like just what I need — living in the heart of the jungle, meetingjaguars, riding sea turtles...
Jack: Hey, daydreamer, you should stop right here unless your second language is Spanish. It was a must, if I’m not mistaken.
Mary: I’ve been studying French for some time, but I can take up Spanish classes as well. Oh, look, the meeting is about to start.

A. Julie has wanted to learn to draw for some time already.
B. Julie often works in summer.
C. Adam supports Julie’s intention.
D. Julie thinks it’s not necessary to learn the basics of drawing.
E. Adam dislikes abstract watercolour paintings.
F. Adam is going to accompany Julie to an art school.
G. Julie and Adam have been friends for a long time.

Adam: Hi, Julie. Long time no see. How are things?
Julie: Oh, hi, Adam. I'm fine, thank you. And how about you?
Adam: The same. So, our summer holidays have just begun. What are you going to do this summer? Have you made any plans yet?
Julie: Well, I'm thinking of going to an art school, but I'm not sure. What do you think?
Adam: An art school? Are you interested in art? I didn't know that.
Julie: You see, I've always dreamed of learning to draw, but I never had enough time to take up drawing. This summer, I'm not going to work, and I've got a lot of time on my hands, so I thought it would be a nice opportunity for me to make my childhood dream come true.
Adam: Go ahead then. What's stopping you from doing it?
Julie: On one hand, an art school has a lot of experienced teachers who can explain to me the basics of drawing. On the other hand, an art school can turn out to be boring and rigid.
Adam: Well, you've definitely got a point there, Julie. Art is very personal, in my opinion. If you don't like the teachers, or find the atmosphere there too academic, it can put you off drawing forever, and that's not what you want.
Julie: Adam, that's exactly what I mean. I believe art classes should encourage creativity and self expression. At the same time, I do need some academic basics, don't I?
Adam: I don't know. You can start with some abstract art. It doesn't require any formal education. I've seen some fluid art pictures and abstract water colour paintings. They are awesome!
Julie: Water colours are just not my cup of tea. I'd rather start with graphics. It doesn't require any expensive materials. In fact, you can start with a drawing pad and some pens.
Adam: I haven't thought about it. Watercolor and fluid art materials do cost a fortune. Well Julie, I think you should start with some proper classes then. If I were you, I'd call several art schools to find out if they offer the first class for free. At least you would see if the school atmosphere is suitable for you.
Julie: That's a great idea Adam. Thank you so much for your suggestion.
Adam: If you find such a school drop me a line and let me know about it. I may join you for your first class if you don't mind. Who knows, maybe we'll have an art exhibition for the two of us one day.
Julie: You are joking, Adam. I don't know how to draw at all. Okay, let's go to an art class together. We can share our impressions afterwards.
Adam: It's a date then.
A — 1. You see, I’ve always dreamed of learning to draw, but I never had enough time to take up drawing.
B — 3. No information.
C — 1. Go ahead then. What’s stopping you from doing it?
D — 2. At the same time, I do need some academic basics, don’t I?
E — 2. I’ve seen some fluid art pictures and abstract watercolour paintings. They are awesome.

C. The author of the book has never had a proper job.
D. The author of the book has many personal things.

Alex: Hi, Mia. I haven't seen you for ages. How are you?
Mia: Oh, hi, Alex. I'm fine, thank you. How about you?
Alex: I'm okay, thanks. I see you are reading something.
Mia: Oh, yes, I am. It's a book ‘My Life Without Money’ by Heidemarie Schwimmer. She comes from Germany and she has been living for more than 15 years without using any money, so she has described her own experience in the book.
Alex: That's hard to believe. I don't think it's possible to live without any money at all. Does she explain in the book what made her give up using money?
Mia: Sure. She started it as an experiment when she set up a so-called swapping circle. There, people could swap things and services without using money. For instance, you can give somebody a music class, but instead of money, you are paid with a second-hand mixer. That started the ball rolling.
Alex: I'm not sure you can get anything this way. What if no one needs your services?
Mia: She says you are certainly able to do something that people need. She used to be a very successful psychotherapist, but she rarely trades her sessions now. When she was writing her book, she was living in a student residence. There she could sleep, have a shower, and use computers, in return for cooking for the other students who lived there.
Alex: How very interesting. Is she trying to prove that instead of a job you hate, you can do what you like and still be happy without many possessions?
Mia: Exactly. She only has some clothes and very few personal belongings and she says she is happy.
Alex: I say, Mia, can you please lend me the book? I'd love to read it.
Mia: I think I should finish it by the end of the week. I'll give you a call as soon as I've finished it so that you can borrow it.
Alex: Do you think you could live a month without any money at all?
Mia: When I'm reading the book, I think it's possible, but as soon as I put it aside, I start to doubt it. I can't imagine myself living in somebody else's house, doing services for them in return for being able to sleep in their house.
Alex: It must be very difficult to live like that. I can understand her motivation and her message, but this way of life doesn't suit most people.
Mia: Who knows? If everybody chose to live like that, it might be possible after all. At least the book makes us think about buying fewer things.
Alex: I'm with you on that point. Look, Mia, I've got to go. Give me a call, okay?
Mia: Alex, I promise I will. Bye for now.

Amy: Hi Chris, long time no see. How are you?
Chris: Oh, hi Amy. It's so good to see you. I came back home only yesterday.
Amy: It sounds very interesting. Did you have a holiday in some hot country?
Chris: Your tan is great. Well, I was in a very hot place. In fact, I was in Africa. Still, I wouldn't say it was a holiday. I went to Kenya to work as a volunteer there.
Amy: Kenya? I can't believe it! It's so far!
Chris: It's a beautiful country, but it's very poor. There's really a lot for volunteers to do there.
Amy: Does it mean you had a choice of what work to do when in Kenya?
Chris: Sure, one can choose to work in national parks, helping to save endangered animals, or look after orphan animals in animal shelters. There are a lot of humanitarian projects as well, and I became a part of such a project. I worked in a very poor rural school in Kenya, teaching kids to read, write and count.
Amy: I'm so proud of you. Not many people wish to spend their gap year like that.
Chris: Well, you know, I've traveled a lot so far, and I've seen so many of the world's famous sites. I thought it was high time for me to do something good for other people.
Amy: You were a star, Chris. Please tell me more about your volunteering experience. Were the local people friendly to you?
Chris: I must say it was quite challenging at first. I mean, the language barrier and the living conditions and the climate. However, when you get to know the people better, you understand how friendly and supportive they are, and how they appreciate any help they get.
Amy: Did you have any time to have some rest? I know that Kenya has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
Chris: Of course, I had some free time. No one can work 24 hours a day, seven days a week. I visited some gorgeous beaches and enjoyed snorkeling while in Kenya.
Amy: What was the food like there?
Chris: It was delicious. I enjoyed eating fresh seafood there.
Amy: Chris, I'm sure that you have wonderful memories about your time in Kenya.
Chris: You know, Amy, leaving my comfort zone was definitely good for me. I made a lot of friends among the locals and other volunteers while in Kenya. I very much miss the kids I taught there as well. I'll never forget my time there.
Amy: Well, maybe I should apply for some volunteer program too.
Chris: Why not? It's a good experience, I think. I'm thinking of going again next year. Perhaps you can join me?
Amy: That would be great.

A. The park is full of children playing.
B. Lily often reads books on psychology.
C. The book contains some facts from the past.
D. Miles finds the book useless.
E. Miles rarely trusts strangers.
F. Lily is going to finish reading the book soon.
G. Miles has invited Lily to the cinema at the weekend.
Miles: Hi, Lily, I haven't seen you for ages. How are you?
Lily: Hi, Miles. I'm fine, thank you. How about you?
Miles: The same. I see you are reading a book. It's nice to read in the park, isn't it?
Lily: Yes, it is. I like it here very much. There are not so many families with small kids here, as there is nothing interesting for them here, I guess. That's why I can have some peace and quiet, and enjoy my book.
Miles: Is the book interesting? What is it about?
Lily: It's very interesting. It's about our first impressions.
Miles: Is it about psychology, then?
Lily: Kind of. I can't say this book is the result of thorough scientific research. It's pop psychology, in my opinion. I can't say I trust every word in this book, but it's definitely fun to read.
Miles: So what does the book say about first impressions?
Lily: Well, the starting point is that it takes a very short time for the human brain to process a first impression. It says in the past it was necessary for people to make their first impressions very quickly in order to escape from any dangerous situations.
Miles: I didn't know that. It gives me food for thought indeed.
Lily: Then the book passes over to explaining the importance of non-verbal communication to the reader. I have found out that our facial expressions and gestures actually say much more about us than we probably want them to.
Miles: I think our body language says more than words. Sometimes I see a person who is saying kind words, but their eyes are cold or indifferent, so I can't trust such a person.
Lily: That's exactly the example which is given in the book. Anyway, the author teaches you how to correctly interpret body language. The third chapter has some practical tips on how to produce a good impression on somebody when you meet them for the first time, but I haven't started it yet.
Miles: I say, Lily, can you lend me the book as soon as you've finished it? I'd love to learn more about making a good first impression, too. It will come in handy when I leave school and go to college. No one will know me there. I'll have to make new friends.
Lily: Sure, Miles. I think I should finish the book by the end of the week. Does Saturday sound fine to you?
Miles: Perfect! Thank you very much! Why don't we go to the cinema on Saturday evening? They're showing a new film with Al Pacino. You can bring the book, and we'll watch the film.
Lily: That's a good idea. See you on Saturday, then.
Statement A: The park is full of children playing. Analysis: Lily says, "They're not so many families with small kids here as there is nothing interesting for them here. I guess that's why I can have some peace and quiet..." This directly contradicts the statement. Conclusion: False (2)
.
Statement B: Lily often reads books on psychology. Analysis: Lily mentions the current book is "pop psychology". However, the dialogue doesn't provide information about how often she reads this genre or if she reads other psychology books. Conclusion: Not stated (3)
.
Statement C: The book contains some facts from the past. Analysis: Lily explains that the book says, "...in the past it was necessary for people to make their first impressions very quickly. In order to escape from any dangerous situations..." This confirms the statement. Conclusion: True (1)
.
Statement D: Miles finds the book useless. Analysis: Miles says the topic "gives me food for thought" and later asks to borrow the book because "I'd love to learn more about making a good first impression too it will come in handy when I leave school and go to college." This shows he finds the book potentially useful, contradicting the statement. Conclusion: False (2)
.
Statement E: Miles rarely trusts strangers. Analysis: Miles mentions distrusting people whose words don't match their eyes ("sometimes I see a person who is saying kind words, but their eyes are different so I can't trust such a person"). This reflects caution in specific situations but doesn't explicitly state he rarely trusts strangers in general. His desire to make friends at college suggests he needs to trust new people. The dialogue doesn't specify the frequency of his trust issues. Conclusion: Not stated (3)
.
Statement F: Lily is going to finish reading the book soon. Analysis: Lily tells Miles, "I think I should finish the book by the end of the week. Does Saturday sound fine to you?" Finishing by the end of the week (soon) is stated. Conclusion: True (1)
.
Statement G: Miles has invited Lily to the cinema at the weekend. Analysis: Miles asks, "What do we go to the cinema on Saturday evening?" Saturday is part of the weekend, and Lily agrees. Conclusion: True (1)
.

Jacob: Hello, Rosie. It's nice to see you. How are you? Are you enjoying your summer holidays?
Rosie: Oh, hi, Jacob. Nice to see you, too. I'm fine, thank you. It's great not to have to do homework. I have so much free time to indulge in my hobbies.
Jacob: I'm so happy for you. If you ask me, well, I'm not doing anything at all. I'm so bored.
Rosie: Don't you have a hobby? You must be interested in something.
Jacob: Well, I like reading books and watching films, but I can do that all the year round. You know me, I'm not as hard-working as you are, and I wasn't very busy during the academic year.
Rosie: Well, why don't you get a summer job, then? That will keep you busy at least for some hours, and you can earn some money for your gap year next summer.
Jacob: My parents have already given me the same piece of advice, but I don't want to work this summer. I'd rather take up some hobby instead. Rosie, can you recommend some hobby for me? What's your hobby?
Rosie: Well, Jacob, my hobby is drawing. I never have time to draw during the academic year, so now I spend a lot of time with my drawing pad and pencils.
Jacob: Drawing requires some special training, I guess. I have never attended any art classes. What shall I do?
Rosie: You can take up doodling instead of drawing. It doesn't require having any special skills. Anybody can do it. And that is why doodling is so good for beginners.
Jacob: I have never heard about doodling before. Could you please tell me more about it?
Rosie: Sure. Actually, there are different kinds of doodles, and some illustrators use it to draw pictures for books. However, there are simple abstract doodles when you just take a pen or pencil and draw anything that comes to your mind, flowers, animals, ocean waves, and so on. You can then color the drawing. It will look fantastic.
Jacob: Have you tried it yourself?
Rosie: I sometimes do it when I feel tired. It really helps me to get rid of stress. I even have a book where some psychologists explain various connections between your doodles and some feelings or problems you might have.
Jacob: I say, Rosie, that sounds really interesting to me. Can you lend me the book? I'd love to read it.
Rosie: You can pop in at my place in the evening and borrow it. No problem.
Jacob: You are a star, Rosie. Thank you very much. Look, I've got to go now. My mum is waiting for me. I'll take the book this evening.
Rosie: Bye, Jacob. See you tonight.
Jacob: Bye, Rosie.

Mike: To tell the truth, Ann, I'm so bored. This weather is killing me. It has been raining for ages. I was looking forward to the summer holidays so much. I hoped to spend much time outdoors playing football and things like that, but no such luck.
Ann: Oh, Mike, I do understand you. It seems that the rain will never stop. Still, I don't think we should be down in the dumps. It's our summer holidays, after all. We have a lot of free time, so we should make use of it.
Mike: But how? I really don't know what to do. My brother plays computer games all day long, and he appears to be quite happy. But computer games are not my cup of tea.
Ann: Why don't you take up some hobby? You can start drawing, or make wooden models of ships or cars. This will take a lot of time, and it's interesting to do such things.
Mike: I don't know. I don't think I'll manage that.
Ann: Why don't you read a book then? There's a new bookstore on High Street. It has an amazing selection of books. You can find all the latest bestsellers there, as well as absolute classics like Jane Austen or Charles Dickens.
Mike: Come on, Anne. Who wants to read a book on holidays? The academic year was so difficult. We had so much homework and books to read. Don't you think we had enough on our plate? I just want to relax and have some fun.
Ann: You can watch a sitcom then. It will keep you busy for a while, and sitcoms are usually very funny.
Mike: That's not half a bad idea. Can you recommend a sitcom to me?
Ann: Well, I think you'd better start with “Friends”. It's a hilarious series about six friends living in New York. There's not much action there, but the dialogues are superb, and the cast is just perfect.
Mike: I have never heard about this sitcom before, but what you are saying sounds interesting. Does it have many seasons?
Ann: There are ten seasons, about twenty-five episodes each. The episodes are relatively short though. They are only about thirty minutes long as far as I remember, so watching a season may take just a day or two.
Mike: OK, I think I will watch it. If it's really interesting, the following week won't be boring to me.
Ann: You'll like it, I'm sure. And I hope in a week the weather will finally get better and we'll be able to spend some time outdoors.
Mike: Let's hope for the best, Ann. Look, I've got to go now. Sorry. Take care. Ann: Bye, Mike.

Greg: I'm okay, thanks. Congratulations on your summer holidays. I hope you are going to do something really exciting during them.
Mary: Actually, I'm going to travel to Russia.
Greg: Russia? Such a great choice. I spent a year in Russia as an exchange student and I absolutely loved the country.
Mary: Oh, I've clean forgotten you've been to Russia. It's so good we've met today then. I hope you can give me some useful tips on my future trip.
Greg: I'll be glad to be of some help. What would you like to know?
Mary: Well, let me think. I have got my visa already and I've booked my trip with the travel agency, so I guess I just have a few practical questions.
Greg: So, go ahead.
Mary: OK. The first issue is the money. Should I take cash or can I pay by my credit card?
Greg: If you stick to bigger cities, your credit card should be fine. In very small towns, paying by credit card or withdrawing cash can be a problem though.
Mary: Oh, I won't go to any small towns. The tour includes just big cities like Moscow or St Petersburg.
Greg: Then you don't need to worry. You'll find exchange offices and ATMs at banks without any problems. If I were you, I'd take some cash just to be on the safe side, plus the credit card.
Mary: Did you have an impression that it's safe in Russia?
Greg: You can visit any place and peacefully walk on the streets. However, you can easily become a victim of pickpockets in the underground, so take care of your wallet and don't keep a lot of cash on you.
Mary: Well, no surprise here. London is just the same. What would you say about the food? Is it much different from what we have here in the UK?
Greg: I'm sure you'll find something to your liking. The only problem you can face is that they seldom have a menu in English.
Mary: Should I tip?
Greg: If you wish. Tipping is expected but not mandatory. In any case, check your bill before paying.
Mary: Which dishes did you like most of all?
Greg: Well, I thought soups were quite nice. Generally speaking, Russian cuisine isn't spicy. I think you'll like it.
Mary: Thank you, Greg. I'll let you know about my impressions when I get back.
