Ann: Hi, Jake. Long time no see. How are things?
Jake: Oh, hi, Ann. It's good to see you too. I'm fine. How about you?
Ann: I'm okay, thanks. Are you enjoying your summer holidays?
Jake: Definitely. It feels so good doing nothing. Of course I have to do some housework, but I don't mind it. Apart from that, I walk, read books and go to the gym every day.
Ann: That's great. You're so lucky, Jake. As for me, I've decided to work this summer.
Jake: Oh dear. Is it a full-time job?
Ann: No, it's only the afternoon shift. I work at my mother's office.
Jake: Your mother is a travel agent, isn't she? So what do you do at her office?
Ann: You're right. My mother has a small travel agency in the city centre. I started two weeks ago by typing the letters and things like that. But after a few days, I had to consult an old lady about a trip to Morocco because there was nobody in the office for some reason. And guess what? The lady bought the tour!
Jake: Ann, you are a real star. Your mother must have been very proud of you.
Ann: Well, yes, she was. So now I have to answer the phone calls and help other agents to select tours for our clients. I can say I'm pretty good at it. My mother's employees say I always give good recommendations.
Jake: Look, Ann, you probably have to consider the career of a travel agent after finishing school. I think you'll be very good at it. In fact, you're already good enough to do this job.
Ann: My mother says so, but I'm in two minds about it. On the one hand, it's a very interesting job because I can meet a lot of people and help them have a holiday of their dream. On the other hand, it's a very stressful job, and I get tired of dealing with people all the time.
Jake: I bet you can tell me some funny stories about your job.
Ann: I certainly can. Most people have very reasonable demands and expectations, and we try to offer them a trip that would be the best value for their money. However, sometimes they can complain about strange things. We had a man who ordered an eco-tour to an Australian farm and phoned us to complain that there were cows staring at him all the time.
Jake: That's funny indeed. I wonder if you could help him in some way.
Ann: Of course not. Oh look, Jake, I've got to go. I have to be at work in thirty minutes. I'm really sorry about that.
Jake: Well, Ann, let's have a coffee some day and you'll tell me more about your job. I'd love to learn more about it.
Ann: Sure, give me a ring. Bye for now.

Amanda: Hi, Bill. I haven't seen you for ages. How are you?
Bill: Oh, hi, Amanda. I'm really glad to see you.
Amanda: Hey, you look down in the dumps. What's the matter? Aren't you happy that the school year is finally over?
Bill: Well, you have every reason to be happy. You have passed all your exams with flying colors. That's not my case. I almost failed my math exam.
Amanda: Really? Are you so bad at maths?
Bill: Oh, Amanda, this subject is torture. I can't make out anything the teacher says. It doesn't really matter how many times she explains it to me. It's completely over my head.
Amanda: Come on, Bill. You can't be that bad. I don't remember you having so many problems with maths before. When did it all start?
Bill: Well, in September, I returned from that exchange program in France, and then I got ill after a couple weeks at school.
Amanda: Oh, yes, that nasty flu you had. You missed like three weeks at school or so.
Bill: Exactly. Then I came back to studies, but it seemed just impossible to catch up with the rest of the class. I guess I should have returned to the parts of the student book that I missed, but I didn't do that.
Amanda: Well, Bill, it was certainly a mistake. If you had returned to the material you missed, you would have understood everything.
Bill: I know, Amanda, I know. The question is, what should I do now?
Amanda: You have the whole summer ahead. Find some math courses or online lessons on the topic you don't understand. Take the student book and pull your socks up.
Bill: Do you really think I'm happy to study in summer? Everybody will be having fun in the sun, and I'll be reading books and solving math problems.
Amanda: I understand it doesn't sound exciting, but at the same time, I believe you have no other way out. You don't want to do even worse next semester, do you?
Bill: I guess you are right. I'll phone the educational center on High Street. They are said to have classes in mini-groups as well as tutorials.
Amanda: I've heard that they have morning classes with a discount, but that means you'll have to get up early.
Bill: Oh, Amanda, you know that I don't mind it at all. I'm an early bird, plus I'll be able to save some money this way.
Amanda: So, what are you waiting for? Call them now.

D. The girl has never been ill since high school.

Receptionist: Good morning, and welcome to the Star Sports Club. How may I help you?
Girl: Good morning, sir. I was just passing by, and I thought I'd drop in. The thing is that I want to take up some sport, but I can't make up my mind which one to choose.
Receptionist: Well, to begin with, my name is Jerry, and it's right here on my badge in case you forget. I'm happy to help you make the right choice. Would you mind answering some questions for me and see what might best suit you?
Girl: Yes, sure.
Receptionist: Do you have any background in sports?
Girl: Well, you see, I'm not a sporty person. I had PE classes in high school, and sometimes I do some stretching at home. That's it.
Receptionist: Are there any medical conditions you have that we should be aware of?
Girl: No, I can't think of any. I rarely fall ill, and have never had any major health problems.
Receptionist: That's good to hear. Okay, why do you want to take up a sport? What kind of results do you want to see?
Girl: Well, I don't seem to have any weight problems, so weight loss programs are certainly not for me. However, I would really love to be more flexible in my joints.
Receptionist: I see what you mean. The number one choice then would probably be yoga. We have a variety of yoga classes to choose from. Power yoga, stretching plus yoga. You would be able to get more flexible and improve your posture.
Girl: I'm not quite sure yoga is my cup of tea. Isn't it boring?
Receptionist: With a professional instructor, a yoga class is always exciting and highly spiritual.
Girl: Do I have any other options in your club?
Receptionist: I was thinking of some dance classes, actually. We have classes of many dancing styles. You may try some and see what's best.
Girl: Can I try the classes before making a final decision?
Receptionist: Of course. You are a student, right? So fill in the form, and I'll give you your novice pass. It means you can come to three classes of your choice, for free, and then decide which one is best for you.
Girl: That's a generous offer.
Receptionist: It's our special summer offer for students only.
Girl: I'd like to fill in that form right now.
Receptionist: Sure. There's the form and you can see the timetable over there and sign up for the classes today.
Girl: Thank you.

Mary: Oh, hi, Jake. I'm fine, thank you.
Jake: Are you getting ready for college? The start of the new academic year is in a week already.
Mary: Yes, I know. It's not like I'm really keen on studies, but after such a good summer it's not so bad to come back to college.
Jake: Did you have a good summer? You are so lucky then.
Mary: I did. Didn't you?
Jake: Well, I stayed in town the whole summer. I had a summer job as a waiter in a cafe, plus we moved house, and it's no easy matter.
Mary: Oh, I see. You didn't really have any chance to recharge your batteries then.
Jake: Maybe next summer will be better. I'm trying to be positive, you know. Well, that's enough about me. Tell me about your amazing summer. You went travelling, didn't you?
Mary: Yes, I did. I think travelling is absolutely necessary if you really want to have a good rest.
Jake: So, where did you go?
Mary: You might be surprised, but my parents and I decided to go to Russia.
Jake: Russia? Come on, you must be joking.
Mary: Not at all. You know, my mum has been learning Russian for a while and she got interested in the Russian culture. So, finally, my dad and I agreed that it might be a nice experience and we don't regret it a single bit.
Jake: You must have visited Moscow and St Petersburg, then. I know these are the two biggest and most beautiful cities in Russia.
Mary: Well, we spent a couple of days in Moscow, but then we took a tour around the Golden Ring.
Jake: The Golden Ring? What's that?
Mary: The Golden Ring unites several Russian towns and cities. They are quite old and have a lot of churches and cathedrals. I think the route is called so because of that. I mean, the colours of the domes.
Jake: It sounds so interesting. Did you take many photos?
Mary: Of course. Besides churches, many of these cities have Kremlins. These are ancient fortresses to protect the cities against invasions. Most of them are still in very good condition and function as museums of local history.
Jake: Was it a guided tour?
Mary: Yes. The tour guide was a very nice Russian lady with excellent English. She knows so much about all these places. I even made some notes.
Jake: Maybe I can drop in some day and you'll show me your photos and the notes.
Mary: Of course.

Manager: Hello. How may I help you?
Tourist: Hello. You see, I would like to book a tour to Russia and I was just wondering if you could help me.
Manager: And may I tell you that you have made an excellent choice. Russia is an amazing country with lots of exciting places to see. Is it going to be your first visit to Russia?
Tourist: Yes, it is.
Manager: Well, for the first visit to Russia I would suggest starting with Moscow. You can spend about a week there and do all the sightseeing plus visit the museums. If you are planning a longer trip, we can recommend going to St Petersburg next.
Tourist: I think I'd like to see only Moscow this time. You see, I'm a theatre lover, and I've read it on the internet that Moscow is famous for its theatres.
Manager: You are absolutely right. We can help you book the tickets to the famous Bolshoi Theatre if you wish.
Tourist: That would be great. Could you please tell me more about the tour?
Manager: Yes, of course. Here is the suggested itinerary. When you arrive in Moscow, you'll check into the hotel and have some rest. In the evening, you can have a bus tour around the city, just to get a general impression. Moscow looks magnificent in the evening, so you'll enjoy it. The next day, you'll be able to see Moscow's sights in daylight.
Tourist: Sounds good to me. Are we going to see Red Square?
Manager: Of course! It's impossible to imagine a trip to Moscow without seeing Red Square, as it's the heart of the country. You will see St Basil's Cathedral. It's a gorgeous building. Make sure you go inside, as there are eight tiny churches there which look like fairy tale houses.
Tourist: Thanks, I'll remember that.
Manager: You'll also see GUM, Russia's number one department store. You'll have enough time to go shopping there if you wish, or have lunch there, in a cafe, with a view of Red Square.
Tourist: I've always wanted to see the Kremlin. Will it be possible to get inside it?
Manager: Yes, but make sure you do it before 4pm, as the museums there close early. There you will see Tsar Cannon and Tsar Bell, and the State Kremlin Palace, initially known as the Palace of Congresses. It's vast — a 6,000-seat auditorium was originally used to hold the Congresses of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Today, it hosts large social forums, theatrical performances, New Year's shows for children and student balls.
Tourist: It all sounds so exciting. I think I'll order a tour right now.

Peter: Hello, Jane. It's so good you're here. I've been looking for you.
Jane: Hi, Peter. What's up?
Peter: Well, I wanted to ask you about your plans for the holidays. Have you decided what to do yet?
Jane: Actually, I haven't.
Peter: Jane, if you want this summer to be truly unforgettable, you must go travel somewhere.
Jane: I guess so. The good thing is that I can afford it as I have saved a good sum of money plus my granny gave me a generous cheque for my birthday last week.
Peter: Well, I have enough money to travel too, so I thought we could plan a trip together. Certainly it will be more fun and not so dangerous this way.
Jane: Oh, Peter, your offer is just on time as my best friend has just told me she won't be able to be my travel companion this summer.
Peter: So we have to decide on where to go. I was thinking about something unusual. What would you say if I suggested going to Russia for about two weeks?
Jane: Russia? I say, Peter, it's not half a bad idea. I've always wanted to see Moscow, the capital of the country.
Peter: Yes, we could start it from there. Still, I believe there are many interesting places in Russia besides Moscow.
Jane: I think we can book a hotel in Moscow and see its main sights, and then make short trips to the nearby cities and towns like Smolensk or Tula.
Peter: It sounds good to me. Still, we must keep it in mind that Russia is a huge country, and two weeks is certainly not enough to see it all.
Jane: What we need is planning our trip carefully. I don't think we know much about Russia, so we need to buy some guidebooks or surf the net. Personally, I don't want to hire a guide. I'd really love to explore the country on my own.
Peter: That sounds very tempting. But won't it be difficult for us? We don't know Russian.
Jane: Oh, come on, Peter. Russia is a civilised country. Everybody there speaks at least some English, I'm sure.
Peter: OK. I say, Jane, there may be some good guidebooks on Russia in our city library. We may look them through and make a rough itinerary of our future trip. Then we can surf the net at home for more details.
Jane: Fine then. We mustn't forget about applying for a visa and booking plane tickets. That might take us some time too.
Peter: OK. Let's do it first thing tomorrow.
Jane: Settled

A. Jim has a regular job with Greenpeace.
B. Jim says that people made the shore dirty while having fun.
C. There were boys only in Jim’s team.
D. Lisa doesn’t know how to become a volunteer.
E. Jim joined Greenpeace because of his interests.
F. You have to be older than 14 to become a volunteer.

Lisa: Hello, Jim. How are you?
Jim: Hi, Lisa. I'm well. I just got back from two weeks at Lake Baikal.
Lisa: Really? What were you doing there?
Jim: I was a volunteer with Greenpeace.
Lisa: That sounds interesting. What kind of work did you do?
Jim: We cleaned up part of the Baikal shore. There was a two-kilometer stretch that had lots of garbage because that's where people come to swim and have picnics.
Lisa: Are you saying that people left their trash around after they left the shore?
Jim: Seems that way. Not everyone is responsible, you know. Some people leave bottles, ice cream sticks, cans, food wrappers, newspapers and magazines right by the water. It accumulates into piles of rubbish, and that's when volunteers come to clean up. There are several teams of us. Each team takes a few metres of the shore, rakes the sand, picks up the garbage and puts it into bags or containers. It's not that much fun, really, but it is very meaningful work, I believe.
Lisa: You know, Jim, I've actually always wanted to be a volunteer, but I'm not sure how to begin. How did you become a volunteer?
Jim: It's quite easy, Lisa, let me tell you. You can choose the type of work you want to do, then look up on the internet an organisation that does this work and contact them about joining. That's how I found Greenpeace, because I've always been concerned about the environment. I started searching on the internet for an organisation that had projects to protect the environment, animals and plants.
Lisa: By the way, how old do you have to be to become a volunteer?
Jim: Well, it really depends on the project and the organisation. For example, in my case, for the Baikal project, I had to be at least 14 years old because it involved travelling quite far and living in tents for two weeks. We even cooked our own meals on the fire some days. We took turns, of course, but all teens had to know how to cook. But I believe some local projects take kids as young as 10 years old. I've seen that in some organizations.
Lisa: I see. Thank you for the information, Jim. I'm very interested in volunteering at the Children's Hospital because I have a heart for kids, so I'm going to research organizations that do this kind of work and contact them. I'm 15, so this should be old enough, right?

Miss Clark: Hello Jake, you look great today.
Jake: Good evening, Miss Clark. Thank you for the compliment.
Miss Clark: I hope you'll enjoy the party. After all, your classmates and you have certainly deserved it. You worked so hard during the academic year and you passed your exams with flying colours. My colleagues and I are so proud of you all.
Jake: Oh, Miss Clark, of course we did a good job. But we are very grateful to our teachers. If not for you, our results wouldn't be so good.
Miss Clark: It's good to know that. Thank you. So, Jake, what are you going to do after the prom? Are you going to have a gap year?
Jake: Most of my classmates are going to travel somewhere, but I won't be able to join them. I'm going straight to college.
Miss Clark: Why? Don't you like to travel?
Jake: Of course I do. Everybody likes to travel, don't they? It's just that this summer isn't a good time to do it because I'll have to help my brother. He's just had surgery, you know.
Miss Clark: I hope your brother is doing fine. How did the operation go?
Jake: It all went fine, thank you. The full recovery will take some time, but he'll be absolutely fine in a couple of months.
Miss Clark: Oh, that's excellent news. So which college did you choose?
Jake: I'm going to Birmingham University. I want to be a teacher like you.
Miss Clark: Really? I would never have thought you had chosen this career.
Jake: Well, I think it's the most rewarding job in the world, so….
Miss Clark: It is. But mind you, not every student will succeed in your class. Sometimes, when one of your students fails, you blame yourself for it.
Jake: I think that's true about many jobs, like doctors for instance. I believe that every student has the potential for success and it'll be so exciting because each new academic year will present new challenges and new potential successes.
Miss Clark: Well Jake, if you are able to look at it that way, teaching is definitely your cup of tea.
Jake: Thank you, Miss Clark. It's you and your colleagues who have inspired me.
Miss Clark: Thank you. Now it's high time for you to join your friends and it's time for me to wipe away the tears. Your words are so touching.
Jake: Sorry if I've upset you.
Miss Clark: No, that's fine. It's always good to hear such things, you know. See you later, Jake.
Jake: See you.

Jim: Hi, Sandra. It's good to see you here in the library. It's not that you come here very often, right?
Sandra: Oh, hi Jim. It's nice to see you too. In fact, I don't like working in the library very much. I find it noisy here. It's hard for me to concentrate on my work this way. I prefer to work at home.
Jim: So why are you here now then?
Sandra: My laptop has gone dead and my father will have a look at it tonight. He is good at repairing computers, you know. However, I need a computer right now because I need to do a presentation for my report tomorrow. That's why I'm here.
Jim: Don't use the computer over there in the corner. It has a nasty habit of playing up exactly when you need to save your document on your flash drive.
Sandra: You're such a good friend, Jim. Thank you. As far as I understand, you come here very often.
Jim: Well yes. I'm here every day after classes. I do all my homework here in the library.
Sandra: Really? Do you find it comfortable here?
Jim: Well, it's not as noisy as at my place. My baby brother Billy often cries and makes a lot of noise. It's impossible to study.
Sandra: Oh, I see. Your parents must be very busy with Billy.
Jim: They are. They can't even find enough time to talk to me. Sometimes I really think they love him more than me.
Sandra: You don't say so, Jim. You have got great parents and they love you. It's just Billy needs much more attention than you at the moment. However, if I were you, I'd talk to them about the whole situation.
Jim: Talk about what?
Sandra: Well, I think you should tell them you can't work at home because of Billy. I mean because he's stopping you from doing your homework.
Jim: I don't want to upset my mother. She has enough on her plate right now, I guess. Besides, I don't mind working in the library. There are computers and a lot of books here and I can always ask someone to help me if I'm stuck, so it's not that bad after all.
Sandra: OK, anyway, it's up to you to decide. Look, Jim, what are you doing after you are through with your work? We could go for a cup of coffee and catch up on each other's news.
Jim: That's a good idea, Sandra. I need no more than an hour to finish the essay I'm working on now.
Sandra: I think I'll be able to get through with my presentation in an hour.

Ellen: I'm doing well too, just getting back from my trip to Corellia.
Nick: Really? Who did you go with and how long were you there?
Ellen: I was with my parents. We went camping there for two weeks. One week we spent at a camping ground near a small lake, and the other week we went whitewater rafting down the river.
Nick: Wow, what an adventurous holiday. Did you stay in a cabin at the lake?
Ellen: No, we didn't. We had our tent. We always sleep in a tent when we travel. It's a lot cheaper.
Nick: Oh my, I wouldn't be able to do that at all. I'm such a hotel person myself.
Ellen: But why, Nick? Camping in a tent is so much fun. You can hear the birds in the morning, enjoy the fresh air and…
Nick: And mosquitoes? No, thank you. I'd much rather sleep in a comfortable bed, warm and clean. There isn't a bathroom when you sleep in a tent, is there?
Ellen: No, not in the tent, of course. But the campsite where we stayed in Corellia had a public bathroom with showers, so that was convenient.
Nick: Well, that's good to hear, but it's still hard to sleep on the ground in a sleeping bag, I think.
Ellen: Well, yes, at first, but then you get used to it. You can use a special soft mat to sleep on. It keeps you warm and comfortable.
Nick: I suppose I could try that, but I still think a hotel room is a nicer place to stay, Ellen.
Ellen: Well, Nick, tastes differ. So what have you been doing these last two weeks before school starts?
Nick: Oh, I've been at home, shopping for school supplies, getting my books and uniform in order, you know.
Ellen: Sounds fun. I still have to try on my uniform and see if I need a new one. I've got all the other things, I think. Did you see that new history book for this year? It looks very interesting.
Nick: Yes, I did. I love the maps and illustrations on it. I hope we have our history teacher from last year again this year.
Ellen: Yeah, me too. She was so nice, and her lessons were so fun. History can be quite complicated sometimes.
Nick: So true, especially when you have to memorize all the dates and names. I can never get it right who led what battle and which Tsar was at the throne at what time.
Ellen: Well, I'm afraid I have to go. There's still much to do.
Nick: Yes, me too. It was good to chat with you, Ellen.

Emily: Hello, Sam. How are you? How was your first day of classes?
Sam: Hello, Emily. I am well. Classes this semester seem interesting, but I am sure they will be a lot of work, as always.
Emily: Yeah, mine look that way too. My history teacher told us that we will have to write four research papers by December, over, and we'll have five big tests. It's a good thing I like history. Sam: No kidding. I think my biology class will be the same way. Our teacher is very demanding. But with all the summer rest we've had, we should have enough energy, right?
Emily: Yes. By the way, Sam, how was your summer? Did you do anything special?
Sam: It was great. I spent two months at my grandparent's cottage on a lake. My grandfather is into fishing, so every day we went out on a boat with him. The weather was hot, so I was able to sunbathe and swim a lot. My friend was visiting his grandparents in the cottage next door, so we spent some time running around the countryside, climbing trees and picking wild berries. Emily: Sounds like a nice, relaxing summertime. I wish I had done the same. I envy you for having spent it outdoors because my summer wasn't nearly as active as yours.
Sam: Really? Why not? What did you do this summer?
Emily: I spent June on the couch in my flat, reading books and watching some boring TV shows. All my friends were gone by then, so I didn't even have anyone to go roller skating or bike riding with. Then in July I went to the seaside with my family. We visited Greece, but the sea was stormy most of the time, so we mostly did some sightseeing and shopping.
Sam: We swam only two times. The most exciting part of the trip was visiting the ruins of Athens. Emily: Wow! Did you see the famous Parthenon? Is it as beautiful as they told us in history class? Sam: Yes, it is very graceful, and the feeling of visiting such an ancient place is amazing. So I took a lot of pictures.
Emily: I would love to see them when you get the chance. Have you got them on your phone? Sam: No, I took them with my camera, so you can see them on my computer. I am also making a photo album of my trip to Greece. So when I'm finished, why don't you come over and look at it? Emily: I'd really like that, thanks. Let me know when it would be a good time to do that.
Sam: I will. I have to run now. Time to get some homework done.
Emily: Bye, Sam.

Emma: Oh, I'm fine. So how are your summer holidays? As for me, I'm just bored. I've watched all the films I wanted to see and read all the books I wanted to read. I simply have nothing to do.
Jason: You can join a gym or find a summer job then. That will keep you busy enough, I'm sure.
Emma: Well, I'm thinking of getting a part-time job for the summer, but I haven't made up my mind yet. So, coming back to you, what have you been doing so far?
Jason: Well, I haven't been up to anything interesting recently, but next week my adventure will begin. I'm looking forward to it so much.
Emma: An adventure? That sounds exciting. What are you going to do?
Jason: I'm going on an expedition to the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. The aim of the expedition is to observe the everyday life of local people, but there will be opportunities for trekking and bird watching.
Emma: It sounds great. I guess it was not so easy to be accepted to this expedition group. Did they have many special requirements?
Jason: I can't say there were too many requirements. One has to be reasonably fit and prefer mountain huts to grand hotels. They were looking for people with some useful skills like cooking, first aid or photography.
Emma: I didn't know you could cook very well.
Jason: I can't cook, Emma. I'm absolutely helpless in the kitchen. However, I'm a very good photographer. I also speak French, and fluent French speakers were also needed.
Emma: Do you need to take any special equipment?
Jason: All the necessary equipment will be provided, but I do have a list of things I have to have. It's quite long and detailed, so it took me a while to get them all.
Emma: I see. Well, Jason, I hope you have a great trip. I expect you to take thousands of pictures of Morocco. They will be very colourful and bright, I'm sure. Will you post them on social media?
Jason: I'd love to, but I'm not sure about that. I don't know if I'll be able to have an internet connection during my expedition. I expect to be offline for at least some part of my trip.
Emma: You'll show me the pictures when you come back then. I'm longing to see them already. How long are you going for?

Manager: Good morning. It's the Best Tour Agency. How can I help you?
Client: Good morning. My friend has recently ordered a tour to Spain in your agency and he was very happy with it. I wonder if you can help me as well.
Manager: We'll do our best to make sure you will have a trip of your dream. What country do you have in mind?
Client: I've been thinking about going to Spain, too. I was very much impressed by my friend's photos. I guess this is a very interesting country.
Manager: This is an excellent choice, sir. Are you going to travel alone?
Client: No, it's me, my wife and our teenage daughter. We always have family holidays.
Manager: I see. When would you like to have a tour?
Client: Is it possible to book a tour starting on the 25th of July?
Manager: Sure. I suggest you should have a look at the Royal Hotel. It's not a big hotel, but it's very cosy, away from big crowds and noisy discos. You'll be able to enjoy some peace and quiet there.
Client: That sounds good, but is it far from the major places of interest in Spain? I wouldn't like to waste much time getting to the sights I want to see.
Manager: You've made a very good point here. The Royal is out of the question then. In such a case, I'd recommend you the Concord Hotel. It's much bigger than the Royal, but it won't take you more than an hour to get to the most interesting places in Spain.
Client: Is it noisy? I'd really love some peace and quiet.
Manager: I don't think so. They are a family hotel. There can be some families with toddlers though. So, if it's a problem, then we can have a look at one more hotel.
Client: No, small kids are great, it's no problem. It's the noisy discos I'm worried about. Does the hotel have a good beach?
Manager: In fact, it's one of the best beaches in Spain, with all the facilities you can imagine.
Client: It sounds perfect. Does the hotel have a gym and a spa? I love to have a cardio session in the morning while my wife wants to relax, as she has a very stressful job. She's a teacher.
Manager: Yes, the gym is fully equipped and free of charge. As for the spa, there will be an extra charge, but it's like that in most hotels anyway.
Client: Sure, well I think I'm going to order this tour now. When can I come to your agency?
Manager: We work every day from 9am to 7pm. We'll be expecting you. Don't forget that if you come today, you'll get a 10% discount on the tour.
Client: It's a great offer. I'll be in an hour then. See you.

Andy: Hey Sarah, how's it going?
Sarah: Hi Andy, all is well. How are you?
Andy: I guess I'm OK. It's just that my mum doesn't let me play on my phone anymore.
Sarah: Really? Why is that? Have you been spending too much time on your mobile lately?
Andy: I suppose so. I got this new game a couple of days ago. One of my friends downloaded it for me and now I want to get through all the levels, but my mum won't let me.
Sarah: Well, Andy, I'm sorry, but I kind of think she's right. She's just worried about your health, that's all. You know, playing for too long on such a small screen can hurt your eyesight.
Andy: Oh, I know that. Last week I had to go to the optician because I couldn't see things on the board in class. The doctor said my eyesight has really worsened.
Sarah: You see, that's why your mum is on you for playing this new game. If I were you, I wouldn't even download any new games for now, so I wouldn't be tempted to play them all the time.
Andy: Sarah, you sound like you don't play computer games. Is that so?
Sarah: I play sometimes, but not every day. I have no more than five games on my computer and maybe one on my mobile. There are so many other things to do that I haven't got time for games.
Andy: What are you so busy with?
Sarah: Well, lots of homework usually, and then I've got football practice every day, so I'm too tired to play on my phone when I have free time. I often simply go to bed instead. When I get a chance, I also like to go outside and play with my dog.
Andy: Football sounds fun. I like to play it with the boys from my class after school, but the thought of joining a team has never crossed my mind.
Sarah: Well, you should try it if you like the game. You can come to the try-outs with me next week. They put out an announcement last week at my sports club about selecting new team members for the boys’ team.
Andy: Really? Well, I'm going to consider it then. It would surely make my mum happy.
Sarah: Good. We could go to practices together if you get on the team, because they are usually at the same time as the girls’ team. Well, speaking of football, my practice is in ten minutes so I've got to get going.
Andy: It was good seeing you, Sarah. Have a good time at the practice and thank you for the idea about joining a team.
Sarah: You're welcome. I hope it works out for you. See you later.

Jack: Hello Mary, I haven't seen you for ages. How are you?
Mary: Hi Jack, it's so good to see you. It's been a year since I last saw you.
Jack: When did you come back?
Mary: I arrived in London a week ago and stayed there at my aunt's place for a couple of days and then took a train to Birmingham.
Jack: So, how was your exchange programme? Which country did you go to?
Mary: Oh, Jack, I stayed in Russia for a year and I absolutely loved it.
Jack: Russia? Well, it's great, I mean, it's exotic. Not many people here in Birmingham can boast of having visited Russia.
Mary: Well, Jack, I chose Russia not to show off, but to study Russian culture more deeply. You know, I've always been interested in Russia. I have Russian roots. I was even given my name after my great-grandmother Maria who emigrated from Russia in the 19th century.
Jack: I didn't know that. So did you stay in Moscow?
Mary: No, I just visited Moscow as a tourist. But I stayed in a small provincial town. However, the school I went to was great and I didn't have many language problems. Everybody seemed to at least understand English and that was convenient.
Jack: How did you find Russian people?
Mary: Oh, they are simply amazing. They are very friendly and hospitable. If you are their guest, they'll treat you to the most delicious pastry you can imagine. They seem to be quite reserved at first, but as you get to know them better, you understand that they are very friendly.
Jack: That's great! Did you travel much around Russia?
Mary: Yes, I did. I can't say it's very cheap, though. Still, it's affordable. So I visited Moscow, St Petersburg, the Golden Ring, and I also went to Sochi with my host family.
Jack: Sochi? It is the city which hosted the Winter Olympics of 2014?
Mary: Yes, that's right.
Jack: Your Russian must have improved greatly.
Mary: I hope so. My host parents said I had done a great job learning Russian. I shared the room with their daughter, Anna, whose passion is English, so we were able to learn from each other.
Jack: You must invite them to the UK!
Mary: I did. They hope to get their visas and visit us for Christmas. My mother is looking forward to meeting them already. Look, Jack, I must go. See you later.
Jack: See you.

Скрипт:
Peter: Hi, Jane! Long time, no see! You look gorgeous - you've got a great tan. I bet you've just come back from a vacation.
Jane: Oh, hi, Peter. Yes, you're right. I've just come back from Italy. I was there with my parents. I spent two wonderful weeks there.
Peter: Oh, how lucky you are! I've never been to Italy. Did you stay in one place, or did you travel around the country?
Jane: We travelled from city to city because my parents wanted to see as much as possible. We had a great time, but there was so much to see and do that by the end of our trip we were exhausted!
Peter: What place did you like most of all?
Jane: No doubt, it was Pompeii. Pompeii is the city that disappeared when the local volcano, Mount Vesuvius, erupted in AD 79.
Peter: Why would someone decide to build a city near a volcano?
Jane: Well, Peter, at the time, people thought the volcano was a mountain, and so no one was worried about living next to it. They didn't realize their mistake until it exploded and volcanic ash started falling on top of the city. By then it was too late. Soon a thick layer of ash covered the houses and the people inside them.
Peter: How awful! Many people must have died in the disaster.
Jane: Well, in 1748 the buried city was found. Since then, archaeologists have uncovered about two thirds of the city. We got the train to Pompeii from the station here in Naples. It only took us half an hour.
Peter: I bet a tour to Pompei costs a fortune.
Jane: Not really. The tickets were really cheap - only €1.80 for a single! We joined a tour group when we arrived at the entrance.
Peter: Look, Jane, how about the language barrier? You don't speak Italian, do you?
Jane: Unfortunately, I don't speak Italian, though I've always wanted to learn this beautiful language. Luckily, our guide spoke good English.
Peter: When you travel to an interesting place, much depends on your guide. Was yours good?
Jane: She was fantastic. She showed us lots of things that weren't in the guide book, which was really good.
Peter: What did you see in Pompeii?
Jane: I saw the amphitheater, the baths, the forum, and some of the most important houses.
Peter: What did you like best about your visit?
Jane: Well, I really managed to get an insight into Roman life nearly two thousand years ago. You know I want to be a historian, so that was important for me.
Peter: I see. Thank you, Jane. You've made me want to go to Italy too!
